At the luxury end of the market, the Kinetico 2020c is the world's smallest, most tried and tested, non-electric, twin cylinder water softener. There is nothing to plug in, no buttons to push, timers to set or clocks to change - just add block salt.
So if you suffer from hard water you probably use around twice as much detergent, cleaning products, soaps and shampoos as you would use with softened water. Maybe you use Calgon to protect your washing machine and some electro-magnetic device for your water heater. You replace the showerhead and the kettle and eventually the boiler and pipes. But short of moving to Scotland, there is only one way to enjoy all the benefits of soft water. That is to fit an ion-exchange water softener to your mains water supply. This will remove the calcium from your water by replacing it with sodium, leaving completely harmless sodium carbonate in your water supply.
