Water Softener Myths
Today, water softeners are considered as one of the most necessary and essential systems for households and businesses.
Unfortunately, there are some common myths and misconceptions about this technology which holds people back from making a great investment. KindWater are going to debunk some of these theories and reveal the truth about water softeners:
Myth
Water softeners make the water salty.
Fact
It is understandable why people believe this myth as water softeners do require water softener salts, but it is completely incorrect that you will be experience salty water once you have one installed. The ion exchange process removes hard water minerals and calcium carbonate, and replaces them with harmless sodium bicarbonate – not salt, so your water won’t be salty.
Myth
A water softener costs loads of money and is an expensive luxury.
Fact
Installing a water softener is an investment, so even though there will be an upfront cost, it will save you money in the long run. You will notice the pennies back in your pocket in no time because you won’t have to buy as many cleaning or hygiene products, and your utility bills will decrease as your appliances become more efficient and reliable.
Myth
I can’t have a water softener with my boiler.
Fact
For many years, it was believed that softened water increased corrosion within some boilers, but this has now been disproved. Using a water softener is perfectly fine as long as you fill the primary side of the system with unsoftened water. So, regardless of the type of boiler you have installed, you are able to install a water softener too. In fact, water softeners are strongly recommended to protect appliances, especially your boiler, from limescale.
Myth
Water softeners take away healthy minerals.
Fact
Some people believe that because water softeners remove hard water minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, that they are also removing important nutrients. However, the calcium and magnesium within hard water are inorganic minerals, which means that they cannot be easily absorbed by your cells and they don’t provide the same benefits as obtaining minerals from a healthy diet of fruit and vegetables.
Myth
Water softeners make my skin feel slimy and slippery.
Fact
Your skin will feel different after installing a water softener because your natural oils will be protected rather than being stripped away by hard water minerals. At KindWater, we use the word ‘silky’ to describe this feeling because, with soft water, your natural oils can successfully moisturise and protect your skin. Before, with hard water, soap scum would be left on your skin, leading to clogged pores and a dry and itchy feeling.
